What is chiropractic, exactly?

If you are visiting my blog, you surely already have an idea of what chiropractic is. But actually…

What is chiropractic all about?

The nervous system specialists!

To understand what is chiropractic, it’s important to get that chiropractors have a global anatomical vision based on their expertise of the neuro-musculo-skeletal system and particularly of the spine.

Chiropractic is mainly about the prevention and treatment of mechanical pathologies involving controlled manual force. Long story short, your chiropractor works on the stressors that unbalance your nervous system.

There are three main sources of stress:

  • physical: inactivity, poor posture, accidents, repeated movements at work…
  • chemical: medication, drugs, alcohol, not enough water, air pollution, pesticides in food…
  • emotional: psychological trauma, recurrent stress, grief…

Your chiropractor restores the connection between the body to the brain, the spine and its nerves, that stretch throughout the entire body. Spinal adjustments and other chiropractic manipulation techniques re-establish and maintain the body’s initial mechanical and neurological balance. It all relies on the circulation of nerve and hormonal impulses which promotes natural biological self-healing, thus limiting surgical and medication interventions!

A well-regulated profession

Did you know that chiropractic is actually the 3rd largest healthcare profession in the world? It’s actually an internationally recognized diploma and a legal status in 40 countries.

Diagnosis is the key

Chiropractic is recognized as a profession of first contact. That means that your chiropractor will be able to establish a diagnosis and – if necessary – refer you to the right doctor: if your issue goes beyond the field of neuro-musculo-skeletal disorders (MSD), your chiropractor will redirect you to the appropriate healthcare professional, so that you can get an IRM of the skeleton for example.

The reasons for a consultation may be:

  • Pathologies related to the spine such as sciatica, lumbago, scoliosis or lumbago.
  • Low back pain: persistent back pain, blocked neck
  • Joint pain: blocked shoulder, tendonitis, hand and foot disorders, sprains
  • Herniated disc
  • Headaches, dizziness, migraines, tinnitus
  • Stress, insomnia, anxiety
  • Digestive disorders
  • One leg shorter than the other…

You don't have to be in pain to see a chiropractor

The main objectives of chiropractic are to relief AND prevent symptoms or pain related to a dysfunction of the spine or joints.

The preventive role of chiropractic is the most important: as the body adapts better, the patient has a better posture and even a better lifestyle, thanks to the counseling given. It’s a virtuous circle!

There are various multidisciplinary approaches and a wild choice of specializations. In my case, I specialized in pediatrics: I take care of newborns and pregnant women.

Contraindications

As I told you earlier chiropractors have a very specific intent to the diagnosis. A chiropractor will be able to recognize the limits of his/her field of expertise and refer you to the right healthcare professional.

Here are some examples of contraindications to a direct chiropractic care.

  • Acute fracture or dislocation of a vertebra
  • Certain forms of tumors
  • Intramedullary/chanalicular hematomas
  • Ponytail syndrome
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
